More info needed

In general, Nvidia makes the best linux drivers. Installation depends on ur distro, but mainly includes getting a package (RPM/deb/whatever) and simply installing it. Usually u won't need to compile anything unless you're using a source-based distro.

ATI makes linux drivers but I've heard nvidias drivers are better. So if I were u I'd buy a nvidia GeForce or something. Please give us more info about your card and distro so we could help.

Well they DON'T make the best

Well they DON'T make the best drivers. Neither does anyone else. nVidia drivers are just a compromise to get 3D acceleration, they are not open source, buggy, and don't support power management.

ATI's are even worse.

Anyway tuxracer is a simple game and all you need to do is make sure dri is working. Usually DRI will work on most video cards unless it's a crappy old thing.

Just make sure you have the following lines in your /etc/X11/XF86Config or /etc/X11/Xorg.conf ( other lines will be there just look for or add these ):

Section "Module"
        Load "dri"
        Load "glcore"
        Load "glx"
EndSection

nVidia reinvents the wheel and so you have to disable dri and glcore here :

Section "Module"
        #Load "dri"
        #Load "glcore"
        Load "glx"
EndSection

i don't want to buy a new car

Section "Device"
        Identifier "Videocard0"
        Driver "savage"
        VendorName "Videocard vendor"
        BoardName "S3 ProSavage KM133"
EndSection

Section "Module"
        Load "glx"
        Load "dri"
EndSection

still can't play TUXRACER :( and glxgears gives me around 80 FPS

the best things in life are free --- so is myself

you're missing the glcore lin

you're missing the glcore line...

check the Xorg/Xfree log to see if there are errors on trying to load the modules..

is that your card? If so then it might be a crappy old thing.

DRI on S3 SavagePro

I have this same problem and the exact same video card as you. Did you ever figure out how to enable dri?
